Bara
Bagh

|
Situated
4 miles away in the desert is Bara Bagh (the Great
Garden) with its clusters of hauntingly beautiful
cupolaed marble cenotaphs of the Maharawals of Jaisalmer,
set on an incline by the water of the Jait Bund. Don't
miss the fine carvings on the ceilings. Closer to
town lies another complex of graceful marble cenotaphs,
almost as impressive, belonging to the Brahmins of
Jaisalmer, called Vyas Chhatri.

Lodurva
Temples
The
ancient Bhatti capital of Lodurva lies 5 miles beyond
Amarsagar. You can still see traces of the ruins of
the city in the desert, but the one monument that is
intact is the Jain Temple of Parshvanatha. Rebuilt in
the 17th century, its ornate torana archway is
perhaps the finest example of its kind in Rajasthan.
Inside the temple is a Kalpavriksha, a representation
of the Celestial tree, with its carved copper leaves,
believed to have the power to bestow any favor asked
by the devotee. This temple, it is said, is connected
by a secret underground passage to Sambhavnath Temple
in Jaisalmer Fort 9 miles away. |
