Nestling in the Himalayas, about 700 kms from
Calcutta is one of the wonderous hill-station, Darjeeling. Everest
is 140 km from Darjeeling and when the sky is clear, one can see
the peak. Kanchanjunga is also visible on clear mornings. Other
than the scenic beauty and the fun of the weather, you can walk
along long paths, maybe take a walk in the tea garden, ride on a
chairlift which takes you down 2050 meters to the valley below,
or trek to a high altitude point. Other attractions include monasteries,
the most famous is the Gloom Buddhist Monastery, located about 8
km from town. Entry to the shrine is open to all. The colorful markets
of Darjeeling are worth visits.
The mountain town worth visiting are Kalingpong and Gangtok. Kalingpong
is a small quiet bazaar town situated at an altitude of 1250m. It
is a mere 38 km from Darjeeling. Kalingpong has two Buddhist monasteries.
Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is a five hour drive from Darjeeling.
